Celebrating 100 years of Golf and Friendships...
1922 – 2022
Welcome to the centennial year of theWashington State Women’s Golf Association!
WSWGA Championship
July 11-13, at Overlake Golf and Country Club
&
WSWGA Senior Championship
September 12-13, at Glendale Country Club
One hundred years ago, a woman by the name of “Frank” Patterson decided that women golfers in Washington should be able to compete for the title of State Champion. “Frank” lived in Grays Harbor, so early in 1922, Grays Harbor Country Club was getting ready for women all over the state to compete in a great tournament at their club. Besides the golf, social events contributed to the importance of the week.
Following the first day of competition, the Washington State Women’s Golf Association was formed. It was the first association of its kind in our state and it was designed “solely for women and managed exclusively by women.”
Since 1922, this organization has attracted some of the greatest women golfers in the Northwest and the United States. Our champions have won major events around the world, including the USGA Amateur, USGA Senior Amateur, and British Amateur. They’ve been NCAA champions, Curtis Cup team members, and winners of other important national amateur events including the Western Amateur and Trans National Championship. Several have been inducted into the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Hall of Fame and others have gone on to professional golf careers.
In July, we’ll be gathering at Overlake Golf and Country Club for three days of golf and camaraderie at our state championship. Like 100 years ago, it will be a great test of golf and also a festive occasion.
In September, the “age 50 and over crowd” will hold their championship at Glendale Country Club. This will be another “can’t miss” event.
As we continue to move through Covid, author Billy Baker reminds us that, “our human story is not one of loners, but of groups, collectives, communities, and friends.” He comments that, “in forcing us apart, Covid reminds us why we are better together.”
Please join us in 2022. It will be a blast!
